Travel eSIM not working after landing? Try these steps

A calm, ordered checklist for fixing a travel eSIM that shows no service, has signal without data, or will not connect after arrival.

8 minute readReviewed for accuracy

Most arrival-day connection problems are settings or network-registration issues, not failed eSIMs. Work through the checks in order and change one thing at a time. Do not begin by deleting the eSIM profile.

Quick scan
  • Confirm the travel line is on and selected for mobile data.
  • Check roaming, APN, coverage, and network selection against the plan instructions.
  • Never delete the eSIM unless support confirms it can be installed again.
01

First, protect the installation

Do not delete the eSIM, reset all network settings, or repeatedly scan the QR code. Many QR codes are intended for a single installation. The profile already on the phone is valuable evidence for support and may only need the correct settings.

Connect to Wi-Fi if available and open the original installation instructions. Confirm that the destination is included, the plan has not expired, and the activation event has occurred. Some plans do not activate until they see a supported network at the destination.

02

Check the four essential switches

Make sure the travel eSIM line is turned on, selected as the mobile-data line, and allowed to use mobile data. Then set data roaming on that travel line exactly as the provider instructions state. Many travel eSIMs need roaming enabled because they connect through partner networks.

If the home line is also active, turn off automatic cellular-data switching while troubleshooting. This prevents the phone from silently using the wrong line and makes the result of each test clearer.

  • Travel line enabled.
  • Travel line selected for mobile data.
  • Travel-line data roaming set correctly.
  • Automatic data switching temporarily disabled.
03

Force a fresh network registration

Turn airplane mode on for about 30 seconds, then turn it off and wait a few minutes. If that does not help, restart the phone once. Network registration after an international flight can take longer than a normal signal change, especially in a busy airport.

Leave network selection on Automatic unless the plan instructions name a specific supported network. If automatic selection fails, try only the networks listed by the provider, one at a time, and wait for registration before moving to the next.

04

Signal but no internet usually points to data settings

If you see signal bars or a network name but websites do not load, recheck which line is assigned to mobile data. Then compare the Access Point Name, or APN, with the plan instructions. Do not invent an APN or copy one from an unrelated provider.

Turn off any VPN, private DNS profile, or restrictive data-saver setting for one test. Also confirm that the plan still has data available. A phone can remain registered to a network after the allowance is exhausted.

05

No service can be coverage, timing, or compatibility

Move away from aircraft interiors, underground platforms, or thick terminal walls and try again outdoors or near a window. Confirm that your exact destination is covered and that the phone supports the local network bands. Check that the device is carrier-unlocked; an eSIM-capable phone can still be locked to its original carrier.

If the plan was installed long before travel, verify its dates and activation rule. If it was purchased for a different device, do not try moving it without support guidance because travel eSIM transfers are not universally supported.

06

What to send support

Provide the order number, destination, phone make and exact model, current location, and a short description of what the status bar shows. Include screenshots of the installed line, mobile-data selection, roaming setting, APN, and any error message. State which troubleshooting steps you already tried.

This gives support enough information to distinguish a phone setting from a network or provisioning issue. Keep the eSIM installed while they investigate unless they explicitly confirm that deletion and reinstallation are safe.
