Dual SIM

Can you keep your phone number and WhatsApp with a travel eSIM?

Use a travel eSIM for data while keeping your regular line available for calls, texts, iMessage, FaceTime, and WhatsApp.

A travel eSIM usually adds a second line; it does not replace your phone number. On a compatible dual-SIM phone, you can use the travel line for mobile data while keeping the home line available for calls, messages, and account verification.

  • Your WhatsApp account does not need a new number just because mobile data comes from another SIM.
  • Select the travel eSIM for data and control roaming separately on the home line.
  • Calls and SMS on your home line may still create carrier charges abroad.

What dual SIM actually separates

Modern dual-SIM phones can assign different jobs to different lines. One line can provide mobile data while another remains the default for calls or text messages. Apple, Google, and Samsung all provide settings for choosing the preferred line, although menu names and capabilities vary by model, software version, country, and carrier.

A data-only travel eSIM generally does not include a traditional phone number. That is fine for apps that communicate over the internet. Your home number remains attached to the home SIM or eSIM.

02

WhatsApp keeps the number you registered

WhatsApp uses internet data after your number has been verified. Switching mobile data to a travel eSIM does not automatically change the number on your WhatsApp account. When the app asks whether you want to change your registered number, decline unless you intentionally want to move the account.

The same general idea applies to other internet messaging and calling apps: the travel eSIM supplies the connection, while the app account keeps its existing identity. Make sure you can receive any necessary verification before changing line settings.

A safer dual-line configuration

Label the lines Home and Travel. Select Travel for mobile data. Disable cellular-data switching if you do not want the phone to fall back to the home line. Follow the travel plan's instructions for data roaming on the travel line, and review roaming settings on the home line separately.

Keeping the home line turned on can preserve incoming calls, SMS, iMessage, or other carrier-linked services, but your carrier's international rates still apply. Receiving a text may be free with some carriers and chargeable with others; calls, voicemail, or outgoing SMS can create fees. Check before departure.

  • Mobile data: Travel line.
  • Data switching or fallback: Off unless intentionally needed.
  • Home-line data roaming: Off to avoid accidental data charges.
  • Travel-line data roaming: Set according to the plan instructions.
  • Calls and texts: Home line or Ask Every Time, depending on your needs.

iMessage, FaceTime, and Android messaging

Apple notes that iMessage and FaceTime can continue to work with a travel eSIM providing data, while your home line remains associated with those services. Review Send & Receive settings before the trip if you use multiple addresses or numbers.

On Android, dual-SIM settings let you choose preferences for calls, texts, and data. The exact behavior can depend on the phone and carrier. Send a test message and make a test internet call before you leave Wi-Fi so you know which line is doing what.

05

The important cost warning

A travel eSIM prevents home-carrier data roaming only when the phone actually uses the travel line for data. It does not make traditional calls or SMS on the home line free. Treat voice, voicemail, and text charges as a separate question from mobile data.
